Fear of water is one of the more natural fears.
However, when this fear gets out of control, overwhelming anxiety around water can make some vacations or sports very difficult.
People often ask what causes a fear of water, but there is no single answer. Human beings can develop fears of anything.
Re-educate your unconscious mind to relax around water. Any fear response can be ‘unlearned’. Hypnosis can teach your mind to be comfortable around and in water.
Being afraid of water is fairly understandable, especially if you aren’t a strong swimmer. However, for a surprisingly large number of people, it goes way beyond being a little afraid. Someone suffering from a fear of water may not even be able to get into a bath.
Most people suffering from extreme fear of water don’t go quite that far, needless to say. More commonly, this issue creates panic at the thought of being out of their depth in a swimming pool or the ocean or the inability to travel by boat. Some are unable to travel by plane if their trip would take them over a large body of water; some are fearful as they travel over a bridge as well.
Most people have a fear of water because of a past traumatic experience. Maybe you had a friend involved in a boating accident, and now you have a fear of open water. Or, maybe you it was something far less memorable – like being pushed in the pool and embarrassed back in school, and now you have a fear of swimming. Maybe you even watched a scary documentary about shark attacks, and now you have a fear of deep water.
Whatever the cause, the fear that you’re experiencing today is coming directly from your subconscious mind – the part of your mind that is responsible for most of your thoughts and actions. Memories stored in your subconscious mind – both major and minor – are driving your current behavior.
Hypnosis can teach your subconscious mind that the traumatic event was a one-time experience.
This experience must be reframed so that the subconscious mind understands that the fear is no longer necessary.
When you overcome your fear of water with hypnosis, your subconscious mind will learn a positive response to water. If your subconscious can associate water with good things – like jumping into a cool pool on a hot day, having fun on the water ride at the theme park, or tossing coins into a fountain and making a wish – it won’t have any reason to be afraid of water.
With hypnosis, you’ll have the self-confidence to know that you can go swimming, hop on a boat, or go to a pool party and stay safe.
