Stuttering, also referred to as stammering, is a speech problem that is quite common in children and can continue into adulthood. It is estimated that around one in 20 children will struggle with stuttering at some point. Around four in five of those affected will grow out of it and it’s estimated that one in 100 adults will continue to stutter.
With stress often making it worse, having a stutter can affect confidence, self-esteem and lead to high anxiety.
You’ve probably noticed that when you get upset or stressed about something, the problems with speaking clearly seem to get worse. And it may also be the case that when you’re concentrating really hard, really trying to speak as clearly as possible, it seems more difficult than ever.
Research seems to indicate this is due to the different parts of the brain that are activated at these times.
Many people notice that it feels easier to enunciate clearly when they sing, or put on an accent. This is partly because these forms of communication don’t feel like “ordinary speaking”.
Singing is music, and acting is pretending… functions which are mostly ruled by the right brain hemisphere, and somehow that seems to take the pressure off, so that it’s easier to produce the right sounds.
These are key findings…the more relaxed you are, the easier communication is. And the more you can engage the left-brain hemisphere (which generally rules logical thinking and speech), the easier spoken communication is.
Hypnosis is a great way to teach your brain new habits.
Hypnosis will help you make progress by accessing the powers of your unconscious mind to change your instinctive behaviors.
You’ll notice you start to feel much more relaxed and calmer. You begin to feel more comfortable with specific words and sounds that used to present problems. You can visualize how you are vocalizing, and directing this process through your left-brain hemisphere. You’ll start to feel more at ease in different situations, confident that you can say what you want, and life becomes more fun!
Hypnosis is an ideal tool for helping people cope with or eliminate stuttering. It’s effective because, unlike speech therapy, for example, it works directly with the unconscious mind. And when it comes to learning or relearning skills, the unconscious mind makes a far better student than its “conscious cousin”.
